Experiencing the Art of Photography: Photo Shooting Workshop at Iwate University

On November 14th, we had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Photo Shooting Workshop hosted by Iwate University. Led by Aikawa-san, a skilled photographer with years of experience capturing campus life, this workshop helped participants improve their photography skills and learn what makes a great photo.

Aikawa-san is an alumnus of Iwate University and currently a senior officer at the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences. Over the years, he has taken countless photographs featured on the university's official website and in various brochures. His deep connection to the university and its surroundings is evident in his work, which often showcases the beauty of Iwate University's landscapes and the dynamic energy of campus life.

The workshop was designed for participants of all skill levels, whether beginners or more experienced photographers. Attendees were encouraged to bring either a camera or a smartphone, so everyone could participate without needing professional equipment.

The workshop was divided into two sessions: one on November 12th from 15:00 to 16:00 and another on November 14th from 13:00 to 14:00. Aikawa-san's teaching method combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, allowing us to apply new techniques in real-time. We learned how to think before shooting. First, we need to observe the subject from all angles to find the best perspective--whether it be from the front, back, low angle, or high angle. Each perspective gives a photo a different mood and tone. Aikawa-san demonstrated how to frame a subject by photographing a flower vase and encouraged us to try it ourselves. Another important aspect we considered was brightness; we should adjust it according to the mood we want to express. Did you ever know that you can also adjust the brightness of a subject on your smartphone?!

After the lesson, it was time for practical demonstrations. The hands-on portion of the workshop was exciting. We had the chance to explore the campus and put our newly learned skills to the test. We walked around the University, capturing photos of subjects we were interested in, and then shared the photos we took with the group at the end.
