I enjoy visiting museums and art galleries, so I often go to places like that within Iwate Prefecture. But to be honest, I had never been to the Kawai Wood Museum before. Since Ritt kindly introduced it, I'm thinking of taking a walk and checking it out.

Wood Museum (かわい木の博物館)

When you hear the word "museum," what do you imagine? Most of us think of a big building filled with displays, signs, and maybe some quiet music in the background. But during my time as a student at Iwate University, I had the chance to visit a place that completely changed how I see museums.

While traveling through Iwate, I visited a unique and beautiful place in the Kawai region of Miyako City: the Wood Museum. At first, I expected to see a regular building, but what I found was something far more special. This museum doesn't have walls or hallways, it's the forest itself.

The Kawai area is covered almost entirely by forests and mountains, with nature making up 94% of the land. The people who live here have always depended on the forest for their way of life. Trees supported their homes, their tools, and even their culture. So instead of creating a museum inside a building, the community decided to turn the forests into the museum itself.

The idea for the Wood Museum started in 2000, and after years of research and planning, it officially opened in 2006. Its purpose is not just to show the beauty of the forest, but also to teach people about the connection between nature, history, and daily life in Kawai. The main building of the museum is located at the Kawai General Office. But the real museum is made up of 17 outdoor locations, called satellite sites, which are spread out across the region. These sites include walking trails, educational signs, and observation areas where visitors can explore and learn directly from the forest.

One of the most impressive places I visited was the Big Tree Forest, found on the slopes of Mt. Hayachine. At about 1,000 meters above sea level, this area is filled with huge, ancient trees--beech, oak, horse chestnut, and many others. Some trees are so large that standing next to them feels like standing next to a skyscraper made of wood. One linden tree I saw had a trunk more than 1.6 meters wide. Another area, Taiki no Mori, is a protected beech forest known for its peaceful atmosphere and oddly shaped trees. Some trees have large knots, open hollows, or wide roots that look like they belong in a fantasy movie. These natural features are not only interesting to see but are also homes for animals and birds.

What makes the Wood Museum so special is its purpose. It is a place for research, learning, cultural connection, and community development. It helps visitors understand how people in this region have lived with and learned from the forest for generations. It also teaches us how important it is to take care of nature, not just for the environment, but for our lives and our future.

My visit to the Wood Museum was unforgettable. It showed me how much we can learn from nature when we slow down, look closely, and listen. It also reminded me that a museum doesn't need walls to tell a story. It only needs a living, breathing space and people who care about it. If you ever visit Iwate, I highly recommend taking a walk through the forests of Kawai. It's not just a visit to a museum, it's a journey through nature, culture, and time!
